Five games into the 2022-23 season, Peetz boys basketball has proven it knows how to compete.

Although the Bulldogs haven’t always come out on top, they’ve made sure to log a few marks in the win column before 2022 expires. Lone Star and Banner County allowed them to do so.

After suffering a couple of early losses to Caliche and Otis, the Bulldogs bounced back with a thrilling contest against the Longhorns, which saw a 57-51 decision break their way. The Longhorns began the matchup slightly outpacing the Bulldogs with a 19-16 first quarter, but Peetz recovered nicely with a 16-9 performance in the second.

Peetz needed every point of its 32-28 halftime lead when the second half rolled around, and Lone Star nearly matched its offensive effort point-for-point in the last two quarters. Still, the Longhorns couldn’t overcome their adversary no matter how hard they tried.

Freshman Rhyder Bayne put up an impressive performance with 20 points, and three other Bulldogs followed his lead. Junior Noah Naegele added another 11 points as junior Aaron Bernhardt and senior Chance Segelke each contributed 10 more. Naegele recorded a double-double after adding 15 rebounds to his totals.

A few days later, after suffering another setback to Nebraska’s Leyton with a 64-48 final, the Bulldogs dropped the hammer on Banner County, which also hails from Nebraska, with a 60-21 smackdown. Peetz held complete control from the start, thanks to a 20-9 first quarter, and never let the Wildcats score double digits in any of the four quarters.

The Bulldogs will hang up their sneakers for the rest of the calendar year, but will return to action on Jan. 6 with a strong chance of adding to their win column. Peetz will travel to Weldon Valley, who has yet to win a single game, for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
