After finishing the 2021 season with a 3-6 record, Peetz football is looking to improve its numbers.

With just three seniors on the roster, though, the Bulldogs are still in rebuild mode, especially now that Aiden Hill will have to sit out his entire junior season due to injury. The returning players still put in the work during the offseason to improve their strength and skills, something that junior quarterback Chance Segelke personally took responsibility for.

“One of our greatest strengths is playing as a team,” Segelke said. “Personally, I tried to get people to work out, whether it was in the weight room or on the field. … As a team, a goal that we have is to make the playoffs. We will achieve our goals by continuing to practice and put in the hard work.”

Segelke believes the strongest part of the Bulldogs’ game revolves around the pass, as he looks to increase his numbers from his 685 yards and 55 completions last year. This season, he’ll have junior wide receiver Noah Naegele, senior running back Colton Howell and senior center Grady White to help him lead the way.

Head coach Scott Sorensen hopes his team will be ready to go once the regular season rolls around.

“Being a young team, I am looking for improvement in every practice,” he said. “We are heading in the right direction. We just need to stay focused on the fundamentals of this great game that we love to play. These juniors and seniors have been taking their licks the last two years. My hope is that we can start getting more victories.”

The Scorecard: After a disappointing 2021 season, one that was cut short due to injuries and a very limited roster, the Bulldogs look forward to what a new season may bring. They return three seasoned players with senior middle hitter Lexie Nienhuser, junior outside hitter Khira Gipfert, and outside hitter and junior setter/middle hitter Addison Ramey. They’ll have someone new to lead them as well.

“I’m a first-year coach so I’m getting to know the athletes and am figuring out what we need to work on to achieve growth and success in the upcoming season,” Leach said. “We don’t have a lot of depth and over half our players are freshmen, but I’m very excited for the opportunity to lead and support these athletes and watch them grow.”
