Peetz boys basketball flexed its muscles the second the 2023-24 winter sports season began. Prairie and Otis couldn’t keep up.
In their first two games of the new season, the Bulldogs dominated, beating Prairie 72-32 and also knocking off Otis 69-51. Neither team proved to be much of a challenge for a squad that last year ended its run in the Class 1A regional tournament.
In their 2023 debut, the Bulldogs blasted Prairie from the opening tip-off, netting an incredible 47 points in the opening two quarters alone, all while holding the Mustangs to 18 points. They carried that flame into the third quarter, scoring another 19, before cooling off significantly with just six points in the final frame.
Senior Aiden Hill and sophomore Rhyder Bayne carried the torch on offense as they combined for 31 points, but led a band of 10 scorers from Peetz. Senior Noah Naegele proved himself quite the Swiss Army knife by rounding out his game with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and no turnovers.
The Bulldogs will cross state lines to take on Leyton in Dalton, Nebraska on Thursday night at a time that’s yet to be determined. They’ll enter the matchup with a perfect 2-0 record and plenty of firepower to boast about.
Unlike the boys, the Peetz girls basketball team is still on the lookout for its first victory of the season. Prairie and Otis proved too much for the Bulldogs to handle.
In their winter debut, the ladies couldn’t keep up with a Prairie team that put up big numbers in the first and fourth quarters, during which the Mustangs scored 21 and 20 points, respectively. Peetz, on the contrary, couldn’t score more than nine points in any given frame before falling in a 61-17 final.
Its 57-23 loss to Otis followed much of the same pattern.
