Area schools will ring with the sounds of the holiday season this December. Here’s a look at what they have planned.
A community tradition, Sterling High School’s annual Madrigal Dinner will be Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 4 and 5. This medieval-themed evening will include dinner, musical performances by SHS’s women’s and men’s choirs as well as the Sterling Middle School eighth grade choir and a theatrical performance.
The choruses will be performing many of the familiar carols, spiritual music and chorale favorites that have been part of past Madrigals, such as “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Carol of the Bells,” “Silent Night,” “Here We Come a Wassailing” and “Of the Father’s Love Begotten.”
Those who attend should be prepared to provide a small donation to the choir department if you want silverware to eat with and don’t be alarmed if you hear shouts of “Huzzah!” and hands slapping the tables after the choirs and wandering minstrels conclude their performances, as that is the traditional way of bestowing praise on entertainers.
The Madrigal Dinner will be held in the Great Hall (school cafeteria), seating opens at 6 p.m. Seats are $20 per person (includes dinner and dessert). Reservations are required and can be made by calling SHS at 970-522-2944.

Northeastern Junior College will kick off its holiday celebrations with a Hanging of the Greens on Tuesday, Nov. 28, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in the E.S. French Atrium. The event will feature a recreation of a European Christmas market, complete with community vendors, live music, and traditional food and drink. Anyone and all are welcome. It’s a perfect event to purchase locally-made goodies and artwork for holiday gifts!
On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1 and 2, at 7 p.m. NJC’s Theatre Department will present Desserts on Broadway, a variety show encapsulating a selection of Broadway-inspired performances with cookies served at intermission, in the Dorothy Corsberg Theatre inside E.S. French Hall. A notable highlight is the talent pool comprises NJC students, faculty and staff. The event is free for all to attend, however, cash or check donations will be accepted.
Due to adult language and content the show is not suitable for youth.
Also on Saturday, Dec. 2, NJC will host Cosmo Christmas from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Hays Student Center Ballroom. There will be arts, crafts, a silent auction, a bake sale (which anyone can donate to) and a chili cookoff. The cost to enter the chili cookoff is $30, for those just wanting to sample the food and vote for your favorite the cost is $5 for adults and $2 for students with an ID. Winners will receive a cash prize and a free service of your choice at NJC’s cosmetology salon.
The event will also feature a Kids Christmas with an entry fee of $5 for children. Take a picture with Santa and his elves, enjoy arts and crafts, cookie decorating, games, a movie, hair tinsel and ornament decorating.
On Friday, Dec. 8, at 5 p.m. NJC will hold a red carpet premier for its episode of” The College Tour” at Fox 5 Theatre. “The College Tour” is a 30-minute Amazon Prime program that highlights aspects of a different college every week. The premier event is free and open to the public. Red carpet attire/formalwear is strongly encouraged.
Rounding out NJC’s events will be the annual Winter Ensemble on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Dorothy Corsberg Theatre.
