Peetz football put together a valiant effort in 2023, winning seven games in impressive fashion, and earned the No. 10 seed for the 6-man state playoffs in the process.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs went to war with No. 7 Branson/Kim in the first round of the postseason and, after battling the Bearcats for three quarters, fell in a 39-37 thriller.

The Bulldogs busted out to a strong start, scoring 15 points in the first quarter, all while allowing the Bearcats to net 12. Branson/Kim held a slight advantage in the second, scoring 15 points to Peetz’ 14, then took the lead with six points in the third and kept Peetz scoreless.

Getting shutout in the opening stretch of the second half was Peetz’ undoing.

The Bulldogs got back on the board with a touchdown and 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter, only to see the Bearcats add six more points to their totals.

The loss ends a 7-3 run for a team that won just three games a year earlier.

Fleming volleyball gets stopped in regionals

In the do-or-die format of Class 1A regional volleyball this year, any small mistake could have cost a squad a trip to the state tournament. Fleming met that fate in its winner-takes-all match against No. 11 Cheraw on Saturday.

Through five sets, the 14th-seeded Wildcats and Wolverines battled for every single point, as neither let the other gain much of an advantage. In the end, Cheraw earned an extension to its season with a 3-2 victory over Fleming.

The Wildcats began their 1A Region 11 tournament riding high as they gained the first leg up with a 25-17 victory in the first set, only to see the Wolverines tie the contest up with a 25-19 win in the second.

In the spirit of summer footwear, the two squads continued to flip-flop.

Fleming regained the advantage with a 25-18 decision in the third set, then surrendered it once again when Cheraw claimed a 26-24 win in the fourth. The Wolverines found what little momentum they could muster in the fourth and carried that all the way to a 15-12 final to send the Wildcats packing for the season.

Fleming ended its season with a 12-12 record.
