Through the first five weeks of the season, Peetz football was untouchable. That changed at Briggsdale on Friday night.

In an absolute barn burner, one that saw nearly 100 points on the scoreboard, the Bulldogs fell just short as the Falcons edged them out en route to a 48-47 victory.

The Bulldogs began the contest strong, scoring 20 points through the first 12 minutes while holding the Falcons to just six, but the tables turned in the second quarter. Briggsdale put up 20 more points and stymied the Peetz offense to six points.

Both squads cooled off significantly in the third and fourth quarters, but the Falcons held the advantage when it mattered most. Peetz netted two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, good for 14 points, but Briggsdale’s 2-point conversions on each of their scores proved pivotal in the final decision.

Once again, sophomore Rhyder Bayne took the lead on the run game with 152 yards and two touchdowns, but senior Noah Naegele’s 68 yards rendered just as many scores. Freshman Conner Schumacher (52 rushing yards) and senior Wyatt Talhelm (one yard) also got on the board with one rushing touchdown apiece.

Senior quarterback Chance Segelke didn’t pass the ball much, but on his five completions, he gave the Bulldogs 78 yards and one more touchdown. That ball fell into the hands of Naegele, who ended his night with 30 yards receiving.

Four boys shared the defensive responsibility nicely, as Naegele took the lead with 15 tackles, followed by senior Joe Fehringer (14 tackles), Segelke (11 tackles) and Schumacher (11 tackles).

The Bulldogs maintained their role in the Select Media Football Poll and this week rang in at No. 7 in the 6-man poll. Now 5-1, they’ll have an excellent chance to bounce back when they host a winless Hi-Plains on Friday at 7 p.m.
