Caliche girls basketball continues to prove just how far they’ve come in the past couple of years.

Last week, the Buffaloes picked up win number seven with a 41-38 nailbiter over Prairie to improve to 7-10 with a few losses that followed. Two seasons back, they won just two contests. Last year it was six.

While junior Karsyn Huss has certain been the X-factor for the Buffaloes over the last couple of seasons, serving as their leading scorer and all-around baller, sophomore Ava Hernandez has been steadily becoming another reliable player.

During the Prairie win last week, Huss stole the spotlight with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals, but Hernandez was right there with her with 12 points, nine boards and three assists. Huss has averaged nearly 20 points per game (19.8) but Hernandez is adding 9.4 more.

The Buffaloes began the contest on somewhat shaky ground, finding themselves playing catchup with just four points in the first quarter to the Mustangs’ eight. Both teams found their footing in the second frame, knocking off whatever rust plagued them up to that point, but the Mustangs still held the tactical advantage going into the half with a 19-13 lead.

Then the Buffaloes turned the tables.

Caliche found new life in the third quarter, but still barely managed to out-maneuver the Mustangs with an 11-8 performance. The Buffaloes knew they needed a big final frame if they wanted to steal victory. That’s exactly what they did.

Through the final eight minutes, the Buffaloes regained control and out-shot their opponent 17-11 to pull out the thrilling victory.

The Buffaloes continue to find success in non-conference play, but their Class 3A/2A Lower Platte league is something they still need to figure out. They’ll have two more chances to do just that, as they wrap up their season this week with a home game against Yuma and an away game at Briggsdale.
